In the last years as the result of the application of automated production processes in the bookbindery the quality control carried out by very efficient control systems gained great importance. A suitable sheet control ensures higher reliability in production.

Very strong requirements of the market related to improved possibility of identifying the sheets, prompted the Italian manufacturer Meccanotecnica to develop a new control system “SignaLynx”. The system arose to enable the customer to receive the whole production line on the Meccanotecnica - machines including the quality control from one deliverer.

After long-lasting research and experiments, aimed to overcome the limitations of the old systems Meccanotecnica decided to apply the ultimate technology, using digital identification with the CCD-Sensor-Camera that already caused revolution on other market fields.

Construction and operation

In principle the SignaLynx is a minimized digital camera, build in a tight box. The device sends the data to its own computer, able to transform and transmit large amount of files for a split second.

The system recognises multiple differentiating signs and sorts of images. The comment from one of the users: „...by the high speed of the machine it is very important and useful that this device uncovers so quickly the differences in the sheets...”

On the pictures No. 2 - 6 you can see some model sheets identified with SignaLynx on the machine running with the highest speed. These examples show text sheets in all possible languages and positions, with images, texts with images or with bar codes, placed on the printed sheets in vertical or horizontal position. All quoted examples were detected and analysed in just 20 milliseconds.

The density of the text. Identification with normal sensibility.

Equal background, different texts. Identification with low sensibility.

Equal background, similar texts. Identification with normal sensibility.

Equal background with nearly equal text. Identification with the highest sensibility.

Bar code, in horizontal or vertical position.

The size of the controlled area is 100 mm x 25 mm; the arrangement of the camera over the crucial part of the sheet gives the warranty for reliable detecting of false imposed sheet. By the most adequately position of the detecting system on the machine no later adjustment from the operator is necessary. The very high processing potential of the system makes possible the identification of pictures and bar codes with single camera.

The speed and the versatility are the most important abilities and advantages of the system, but what about the accuracy and reliability? Basing on both the applied algorithm and the intelligence of the system, developed through long-lasting years of experience, the sheet control SignaLynx is a leading tool in accuracy and efficiency.

The detecting ability of the scanned sheets provides such high an accuracy that the unwanted stops of the production line occur very rarely. The false stops were typical problems of the machines and made the operators lower the sensibility of the control or – what even worse - completely switch the control system off. The possibility of setting adequate sensibility for each sheet with just one camera is the following development of this system.

Some particularly difficult problems in the development of the algorithm project for the high power of the SignaLynx system:

·         False stops caused by colour fluctuations, wrongly folded sheets, swollen sheets etc. were significantly reduced.

·         The shortening of the learning phase (only one image, picture or figure per one sheet). In this way the control of the sheets may be introduced immediately. The recognition of the sheets is possible on running or standing machines.

·         Possible recognition of some types of problems on the gathering machines by the system itself (for example: “Change the sheet number 3 with sheet number 4”, or detecting of doubled or false sheet) and immediate suggestion for the operator how to remove this error.

·         The maximum amount of sheets in a controlled pad: 230 sheets

·         The possibility to load down the sequence of bar codes to the gathering machine over the customers Intranet - Network. Thanks to this system one can omit some further controls in palettes circulation, lacking sheets, titles and language variations.

The SPS/PC interface operates in digital mode and may communicate both by a serial linkage (RS232/RS485) and over Ethernet with free programmable protocols. Linkage to other machines controlling systems is thus very quick and simple.

Currently Standard Bar Code 2/5 Interleaved and Code 39 are available but it is also possible to install other Data Matrix Codes. The system recognises the bar code and deciphers the values. All data (like order number, sheet number, total amount of good and bad sheets) may be used to improve the production control.

Textfeld: It is possible to transfer all this data collections in ASCII format over the Ethernet - Interface and to exploit them (an original quotation from our customer’s opinion) „for optimization of the logistic and production”.

Until now more than 400 cameras (on book sawing machines, gathering and other machines) have been installed and they work to full satisfaction of the users.

SignaLynx is another confirmation for Meccanotecnica that the growing satisfaction of the clients may be achieved particularly by new innovative technology, new products and exclusive customer service.
